Weekly Wisdom: My period makes me a monster.
Good morning, unicorn baby! How are you feeling today?
Personally, I’m a lot chiller than last week. I’ve talked a lot about my anxiety on here - and boy did it ever come to the forefront on Monday night. I basically didn’t sleep and then got up at 5am, completely anxious out of my mind.
Of course, my husband (who is always so gentle with me, bless him), took me into his arms and said, “Babe, could you be feeling like this because you’re getting your period?”
He was right of course. This happens ever single month and yet I am always shocked when my personality seems to completely alter and my anxiety becomes insurmountable for a day (or three) before my cycle starts. I am downright inconsolable. I’m a sad little anxious mess who cannot get it the fuck together. EVERY SINGLE TIME. It feels like I get amnesia every single time the bleeding stops and am equally as confused the following month.
Have you felt like that? I went online searching for answers and came across writer Rose Stokes’ latest column for Metro UK. It really articulated exactly how I feel whenever I get my period and how fucking insane it seems to make me. In her case it’s more emotional anger than anxiety, but it really felt like we were on the same wavelength. Rose, if you’re reading this I love you.
It sort of goes like this: about a week before my period is due I’ll wake up feeling tired, and within the first hour or so, something will piss me off. Just a little bit to get things started. This escalates pretty quickly and usually by about midday I’m bubbling over with a kind of molten hot anger that absolutely must be recognised and validated by those close to me. But here’s the weird thing: most of the time I have absolutely no idea what I’m angry about. Both everything and nothing at all.
Read more of the article below: Does Anyone Else Feel Like Their Personality Completely Changes When They’re PMS-ing? It’s an extremely relatable piece and might offer some more comfort to all my little period-having babies out there in the world.
Anyway, if you’re on your period right now, have PMS, or are struggling with anything else period-related and feel like absolute shit, I’m here for you. We’re in this together forever.
This week’s mantras:
It’s OK to not be OK sometimes.
When I’m going through something hard, it’s OK to cry and be emotional and upset.
I am human and humans have emotions.
I will love myself.
I love you. Have a great week!
XOXO Gigi
